In einer Hand voll Erde leben mehr Mikroorganismen als Menschen auf der Erde. Um zu verstehen wie diese verschiedenen Lebensformen in Austausch treten, kommunizieren, zusammenarbeiten braucht es Tage, Monate, Jahre. Doch wie können wir mehr Fürsorge für den Boden tragen und das unsichtbare Ökosystem unter unseren Füssen wertschätzen lernen?
Der Workshop mit dem Agronomen und Bodenwissenschaftler Bernd Felderer gibt uns einen Einblick in das komplexe Zusammenleben im Boden und wie seine Fruchtbarkeit mit den Handlungen des Menschen und des mehr als menschlichen zusammenhängt. Die Teilnehmer*innen sind eingeladen Bodenproben aus dem eigenen Garten mitzubringen, welche dann im temporären Galerielabor in der ar/ge kunst auf Körnung, Ph-Wert, Kalk – und Humusgehalt untersucht werden.
Der Workshop findet im Rahmen der Ausstellung Plant Plant von Katrin Hornek, eine Ko-Produktion von ar/ge kunst und BAU, statt. In ihrer künstlerischen Praxis, setzt sich Katrin Hornek stets für ein komplexeres Verständnis von Natur und Kultur ein. Die gleichnamige Videoinstallation Plant Plant geht auf die Spuren des Ammoniaks: im menschlichen Körper, in der Luft, im Boden, in Stahlrohren einer Kunstdüngerfabrik. Die Künstlerin wird beim Workshop anwesend sein und den Teilnehmer*innen durch die Ausstellung begleiten.
Der Boden Workshop ist Teil der Workshop-Serie savoir-vivre, die ausgehend vom Ausstellungsprogramm konzipiert ist. Inspiriert von der Relektüre der Begriffe “savoir/pouvoir” von Gayatri Spivak, einer Mitbegründerin der postkolonialen Theorie, wird wissen nicht nur mit Macht, sondern mit können (pouvoir/ to be able to) verknüpft. Durch die Verbindung der beiden Verben, wird die Institution als Handlungsraum gelesen, wo unterschiedliche Fähigkeiten und Kompetenzen ein kollektives Wissen produzieren.
Der Agronom und Bodenwissenschaftler Bernd Felderer wurde 1979 in Deventer (NL) geboren und lebt in Meran. Nach dem Diplomstudium der Landwirtschaft an der Universität für Bodenkultur in Wien hat er 2013 an der ETH sein Forschungsdoktorat abgeschlossen. Nach diversen beruflichen und akademischen Erfahrungen im Ausland ist er seit 2016 Teilhaber der Firma Ecorecycling, welche ein Labor für chemische Bodenanalyse führt.

A handful of soil contains more micro-organisms than there are humans living on Earth. It would take days, months, years to understand how these different life-forms interact, communicate, collaborate. But how can we learn to appreciate and better care for the invisible ecosystems in the ground beneath our feet? This workshop with agronomist and soil scientist Bernd Felderer will provide insights into the complex nature of co-existence in the soil and how its fertility is bound up with the actions of humans and more-than-humans. Participants are invited to bring soil samples from their own gardens; these samples will then be tested for granulation, Ph value, lime and humus content in the temporary gallery laboratory at ar/ge kunst.
The workshop takes place in the context of Katrin Hornek’s exhibition Plant Plant, a co-production between ar/ge kunst and BAU. Katrin Hornek’s artistic practice has always advocated a more complex conception of nature and culture. The eponymous video installation Plant Plant investigates traces of ammonia – in the human body, in the air, in the soil, in the steel pipes of a fertilizer factory. The artist will be present at the workshop to show participants around the exhibition.
The Soil workshop is part of the workshop series savoir–vivre, which is conceived in parallel to the ar/ge kunst exhibition programme. The title savoir-vivre is based on a re-reading of the terms savoir and pouvoir in the work of Gayatri Spivak, co-founder of postcolonial theory, where knowledge (savoir) is not only linked to power but also to the condition of being able to (pouvoir). This combination of verbs turns the institution into a public space of negotiation and agency where an exploration of different forms of skills and competences produces collective knowledge.
Agronomist and soil scientist Bernd Felderer was born in 1979 in Deventer (NL) and lives in Merano. After graduating in agriculture from the Universität für Bodenkunde in Vienna, he completed his research doctorate at the ETH in 2013. After various professional and academic experiences abroad, he has been a partner in the company Ecorecycling, which runs a laboratory for chemical soil analysis, since 2016.

Ci sono più microrganismi che vivono in una manciata di terra che persone sulla terra. Ci vogliono giorni, mesi, anni per capire come queste diverse forme di vita interagiscono, comunicano, collaborano. Ma come possiamo prenderci più cura del suolo e imparare ad apprezzare l’ecosistema invisibile sotto i nostri piedi?
Il workshop con l’agronomo e scienziato del suolo Bernd Felderer approfondirà la complessità della coesistenza nel suolo e come la sua fertilità sia legata alle azioni degli umani e del più che umano. I partecipant* sono invitat* a portare campioni di terra dal proprio giardino, che saranno poi analizzati per granulometria, valore del pH, contenuto di calce e humus, in un laboratorio temporaneo ad ar/ge kunst.
Il workshop si svolge nel contesto della mostra Plant Plant di Katrin Hornek, una co-produzione di ar/ge kunst e BAU. Nella sua pratica artistica, Katrin Hornek persegue una comprensione più complessa di natura e cultura. L’installazione video omonima Plant Plant traccia l’ammoniaca nel corpo umano, nell’aria, nel suolo, nei tubi d’acciaio di una fabbrica di fertilizzanti artificiali. L’artista sarà presente al workshop e accompagnerà i partecipanti attraverso la mostra.
Suolo fa parte della serie di workshop savoir-vivre concepiti parallelamente al programma espositivo di ar/ge kunst. Il titolo savoir-vivre è una rilettura dei concetti di savoir/pouvoir come concepiti da Gayatri Spivak, una delle figure fondatrici del pensiero femminista post-coloniale; dove sapere non è più esclusivamente connesso a un’idea di potere ma anche all’ “essere in grado di” (being able to / pouvoir). Attraverso questa combinazione di verbi, l’istituzione è considerata uno spazio pubblico di azione, dove l’esplorazione di diverse abilità e competenze permette la produzione di un sapere collettivo.
Agronomo e scienziato del suolo Bernd Felderer è nato nel 1979 a Deventer (NL) e vive a Merano. Dopo la laurea in agricoltura all’Universität für Bodenkunde a Vienna, ha completato il suo dottorato di ricerca all’ETH nel 2013. Dopo varie esperienze professionali e accademiche all’estero, dal 2016 è socio della società Ecorecycling, che gestisce un laboratorio di analisi chimiche del suolo.
