Das Herzstück einer Stube ist der Kachelofen. Wo und wie wird diese traditionsreiche Wärmequelle heute noch hergestellt? Welches Wissen um den Kachelofenbau wird weitergegeben und welches neu gedacht und verortet? Wie auch andere Künstler*innen in der aktuellen Ausstellung The Lying Body: Only the Futures Revisit the Past in der ar/ge kunst, nimmt Walter Niedermayr die Stube des 15. Jahrhundert zum Anlass, um über die Beziehung von Tradition und Zukunft zu reflektieren und arrangiert neun fotografisch festgehaltene Stuben zu einem ornamentalen, auf Tapete gedruckten Motiv. Zu dieser wandfüllenden Tapete gesellt sich im Galerieraum eine temporäre Werkbank des erfahrenen Keramikers Marcadent Giuseppe, der uns die Kachelöfen-Herstellung näher bringt. Wie könnt ein Ofen der Zukunft ausschauen? Durch aktives Tun mit Ton werden die Teilnehmer*innen fiktive Öfen der Zukunft formen. Eingeführt wird der Workshop von einem Kurzbesuch im benachbarten Stadtmuseum mit Besichtigung der außergewöhnlichen Kachelsammlung.
Marcadent Giuseppe ist ein italienischer Keramiker (Meister) der mit Porzellan und Hochtemperatursteinzeug arbeitet. Seit fast vierzig Jahren stellt er im Trentino handgefertigte Majolikaöfen her. Mit der Eröffnung der Firma MARC CERAMIC DESIGN 2008, hat er sich auf die Herstellung von Dekorationsgegenständen spezialisiert, insbesondere auf Wanddekorationen aus Keramik.
Der Kachelofen Workshop ist Teil der Workshop-Serie savoir-vivre, die ausgehend vom Ausstellungsprogramm konzipiert ist. Inspiriert von der Relektüre der Begriffe “savoir/pouvoir” von Gayatri Spivak, einer Mitbegründerin der postkolonialen Theorie, wird wissen nicht nur mit Macht, sondern mit können (pouvoir/ to be able to) verknüpft. Durch die Verbindung der beiden Verben, wird die Institution als Handlungsraum gelesen, wo unterschiedliche Fähigkeiten und Kompetenzen ein kollektives Wissen produzieren.

The heart of any timber-clad room (Stube) is its tiled stove. Where and how is this traditional source of warmth still in production today? Which knowledge of stove-making is being passed down, and which is being adapted and applied in new ways? Like the other artists involved in the current exhibition at ar/ge kunst, The Lying Body: Only the Futures Revisit the Past, Walter Niedermayr takes the 15th century timber-clad room (Stube) as an opportunity to reflect on the interplay of tradition and possible futures, arranging a variety of such living rooms as an ornamental wallpaper design. His floor to ceiling roll-out of said wallpaper in the gallery is joined by a temporary workbench of the experienced Italian ceramicist Marcadent Giuseppe, who introduces us to the techniques used in the manufacture of tiled stoves. What might a tiled stove of the future look like? Workshop participants have a hands-on opportunity to show us, by forming fantastical oven designs from clay. And by way of introduction, they will first make a quick visit to the civic museum next door to ar/ge kunst, to see its extraordinary collection of tiles.
Ceramicist (master craftsman) Marcadent Giuseppe is highly skilled in work with porcelain and high-temperature stoneware. For almost fourty years he has been crafting handmade majolica stoves in Trentino. Since launching the company MARC CERAMIC DESIGN in 2008, he has further specialized in the manufacture of decorative elements, in particular, ceramic murals.
The Stove Workshop is part of the savoir-vivre workshop series devised to reflect and resonate with the exhibition programme. Inspired by the co-founder of postcolonial theory, Ms. Gayatri Spivak, to reinterpret the terms “savoir/pouvoir” – French for “knowledge/power” as well as for “to know/ to be able” – we welcome the idea that knowledge can be associated not only with “power” but also with “ability”. Combining the two terms allows the art institution to be read as a negotiable sphere, where different abilities and competencies produce collective knowledge.

Il cuore di una “stube” è la stufa a olle. Dove e come si produce ancora oggi questa fonte di calore tradizionale? Quali conoscenze sulla costruzione delle stufe sono state trasmesse e quali sono state ripensate e ricollocate? Come altr* artist* presenti nell’attuale mostra The Lying Body: Only the Futures Revisit the Past presso ar/ge kunst, Walter Niedermayr prende una stube del XV secolo come occasione per riflettere sul rapporto tra tradizione e futuro. La carta da parati di Niedermayr, in cui nove stuben sudtirolesi sono stampate e compongono un motivo ornamentale, farà da sfondo al banco di lavoro temporaneo del ceramista Marcadent Giuseppe, che ci introduce alle tecniche di realizzazione di stufe a olle e piastrelle in maiolica. Che forma potrebbe avere una stufa del futuro? Lavorando attivamente con l’argilla, i partecipanti daranno forma a stufe fittizie del futuro. Il workshop viene introdotto da una breve visita al vicino museo civico dove insieme visiteremo la straordinaria collezione di formelle (olle) da stufa.
Marcadent Giuseppe è un ceramista italiano (Maestro Artigiano) che lavora con la porcellana e il gres ad alta temperatura. Da quasi quarant’ anni produce stufe a olle fatte a mano in Trentino. Con l’apertura dell’azienda MARC CERAMIC DESIGN 2008, si è specializzato nella produzione di oggetti decorativi, soprattutto decorazioni murali in ceramica.
Il Workshop Stufa ad olle fa parte della serie di workshop savoir-vivre concepiti parallelamente al programma espositivo di ar/ge kunst. Il titolo savoir-vivre è una rilettura dei concetti di savoir/pouvoir come concepiti da Gayatri Spivak, una delle figure fondatrici del pensiero femminista post-coloniale; dove sapere non è più esclusivamente connesso a un’idea di potere ma anche all’ “essere in grado di” (being able to / pouvoir). Attraverso questa combinazione di verbi, l’istituzione è considerata uno spazio pubblico di azione, dove l’esplorazione di diverse abilità e competenze permette la produzione di un sapere collettivo.
