Juni ist die Zeit wo Geranien in allen Farben an unzähligen Balkonen in den Alpen blühen. Die sehr resistente Pflanze erreichte nach langen Schiffsreisen aus Südafrika vor über 400 Jahren Europa und ist seitdem ein wichtiger Teil der alpenländischen Kultur geworden und vom Erscheinungsbild der Alpen nicht mehr wegzudenken. Bis heute ist die Blume oft Teil von Werbekampagnen, in Kriegszeiten wurde sie auch zu Propagandazwecken (Brennende Liab) verwendet. Ein ikonografisch aufgeladenes Subjekt, das verborgenes Wissen und Geschichten in sich trägt.
Die zehnte Ausgabe von savoir-vivre lädt die Teilnehmer*innen zu einem Geranium Hydrolat Workshop in die Räumlichkeiten der ar/ge kunst ein. Gemeinsam mit der Botanikerin Helga Seeber nähern wir uns dem Prinzip der Wasserdampfdestillation mit fachgerecht geernteten Rosengeranienblättern und gewinnen dadurch Hydrolate und ätherische Öle. Es handelt sich dabei nicht um die gewöhnliche Balkongeranie, die zwar auch dank ihres Eigengeruchs zur Abwehr der lästigen Fliegen und Mücken dient, sondern um eine alte Sorte. Welche Assoziationen löst die Pflanze in ihren unterschiedlichen Erscheinungsformen aus? Während sie in der Blüte für manche das Symbol von Heimat in sich trägt, öffnet der destillierte Duft ihrer Blätter ganz andere Verbindungen zur Pflanze und bringt damit eine starres Festschreiben von Wissen im Sinne der unpacking knowledges in Bewegung.
Helga Seeber, 1972 in Bruneck geboren, in Gais aufgewachsen. Studium der Biologie (Botanik und Phytochemie) und parauniversitäres Studium „Tecniche erboristiche“ (Techniken der Heilpflanzenkunde). In Folge beschäftigt sich Seeber mit verschiedensten Herstellungsmethoden der Kräuterproduktion, baut Kräuter im Permakultur-Gemeinschaftsgarten in Guggenberg in Ulten an und verarbeitet selbst gesammelte Wildkräuter. Derzeit arbeitet sie im Amt für Natur, Bereich Umweltbildung, Provinz Bozen.

June is the month when geraniums of all colours bloom on countless balconies all over the Alps. This very hardy plant reached Europe more than 400 years ago, following lengthy sea voyages from South Africa, and it has since become such an important part of Alpine culture that it’s impossible to imagine how the Alps would look without it. Nicknamed the “Brennend’ Liab” (Ardent Love), it features to this day in advertising and has been used also in wartime propaganda. In short, the plant is iconic, highly charged, and packed with hidden knowledge and stories.
For the tenth edition of savoir-vivre, we invite you to join us for the Geranium Hydrolate Workshop at ar/ge kunst. With botanist Helga Seeber, we will learn how to obtain hydrolytes and essential oils from professionally harvested geranium leaves by means of steam distillation. This is not the usual balcony geranium, which admittedly also serves to ward off the annoying flies and mosquitoes thanks to its own smell, but an old variety. What associations does the plant trigger in its various manifestations? While the bloom itself is for many a potent symbol of heimat, the distilled scent of the leaves gives rise to a myriad of sensations, thus unsettling our established knowledge of the plant, true to the aims of our theme: unpacking knowledges.
Helga Seeber, born 1972 in Bruneck, grew up in Gais. Studied biology (botany and phytochemistry) and parauniversity studies in “Tecniche erboristiche” (herbal techniques). Seeber is involved in various methods of herb production, grows herbs in the permaculture community garden in Guggenberg in Ulten and processes the wild herbs she collects herself. She is currently employed at the Department of Nature, Environmental Education, Province of Bolzano.

Giugno è il periodo in cui gerani di tutti i colori fioriscono su innumerevoli balconi delle Alpi. Questa pianta molto resistente è arrivata in Europa più di 400 anni fa, dopo lunghi viaggi in mare dal Sudafrica, e da allora è diventata una parte importante della cultura alpina; impossibile immaginare l’aspetto delle Alpi senza di essa. Ancora oggi, il fiore fa spesso parte di campagne pubblicitarie e, in tempo di guerra, è stato utilizzato anche a scopo propagandistico (Brennende Liab). Un soggetto iconograficamente carico che porta con sé conoscenze e storie nascoste.
La decima edizione di savoir-vivre invita i/le partecipant* ad un laboratorio di idrolato di geranio presso la sede di ar/ge kunst. Insieme alla botanica Helga Seeber, ci avvicineremo al principio della distillazione a vapore con foglie di geranio rosa raccolte professionalmente per ottenere idrolati e oli essenziali. Non si tratta del comune geranio da balcone, utilizzato anche per allontanare mosche e zanzare grazie al suo odore, ma di una varietà antica. Quali associazioni suscita la pianta nelle sue diverse manifestazioni? Mentre in fiore è simbolo di heimat per alcun*, il profumo distillato delle sue foglie apre associazioni completamente diverse, scompaginando la nostra conoscenza consolidata della pianta, in linea con gli obiettivi del nostro tema: disfare i saperi (unpacking knowledges).
Helga Seeber, nata a Brunico nel 1972, è cresciuta a Gais. Ha seguito studi nell’ambito della biologia (botanica e fitochimica) e studi parauniversitari in “Tecniche erboristiche”. In seguito Seeber si dedica a vari metodi di produzione di erbe, coltiva erbe nell’orto comunitario in permacultura di Guggenberg in Val d’Ultimo e lavora le erbe selvatiche raccolte. Attualmente lavora presso il Dipartimento di Natura, Educazione ambientale, Provincia di Bolzano.
