Forscherin und Designerin
Merve Bektaş (Istanbul, *1993) ist eine öko-soziale Designerin, Künstlerin und aktuelle Forscherin am Kompetenzzentrum für Innovationsökosysteme in Bergregionen (engl. Competence Centre for Mountain Innovation Ecosystems) an der Freien Universität Bozen (unibz), welches Teil des PNRR-Projekts iNEST ist. Ziel ist dieses Kompetenzzentrum ist die Entwicklung neuer Produkte und Lebensstile, die lokale Bergtraditionen erhalten und die wirtschaftliche sowie soziale Lebensfähigkeit von Berggebieten sichern.
Merve Bektaş Praxis bewegt sich an der Schnittstelle von praxisbasierter Forschung, Design und öko-sozialer Transformation. Ihr Forschungsschwerpunkt liegt vor allem auf der lokalen Wollproduktion und den Beziehungen zwischen Materialien, Landschaften und Gemeinschaften. Vor Kurzem gründete sie WOLB Wollelab, eine webbasierte Plattform, die erstmals das lokale Woll-Ökosystem Südtirols kartiert. Durch eine interaktive Karte macht das Projekt die vielfältigen Beziehungen und Interaktionen zwischen menschlichen und mehr-als-menschlichen Akteuren sowohl im städtischen als auch im ländlichen Kontext sichtbar.
Im Juli 2026 wurde Merve von BAU als Beitragende zum Grass Socialities Symposium eingeladen, der Abschlussveranstaltung des europäischen Projekts Pastoral Twilight, an dem BAU beteiligt gewesen war. In ihrem Vortrag „Designing and Making with Wool (and Sheep) of the Italian Alps“ teilte sie ihr Wissen über sozialökologische Praktiken im Zusammenhang mit Wolle und deren Akteur*innen.
Die BAU Residency Künstler*innen 2026 Suzanne Bernhardt und Philipp Kolmann (ERBA) waren mit Merve im dialogischen Austausch über Transhumanz-Praktiken und die lokale Wollproduktion in Südtirol.
Researcher & Designer
Merve Bektaş (Istanbul, *1993) is an eco-social designer, artist, and current researcher at the Competence Centre for Ecosystems of Innovation in Mountain Contexts at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano. Her practice operates at the intersection of practice-based research, design, and eco-social transformation.
Her research focuses primarily on local wool production and the relationships between materials, landscapes, and communities. She recently founded WOLB Wollelab, a web-based platform that, for the first time, maps the local wool ecosystem of South Tyrol. Through an interactive map, the project makes visible the multiple relationships and interactions between human and more-than-human actors within both urban and rural contexts.
In July 2026, Merve was invited by BAU as a contributor to the Grass Socialities Symposium, the concluding event of the European project Pastoral Twilight, in which BAU participated. In her lecture “Designing and Making with Wool (and Sheep) of the Italian Alps”, she shared her knowledge of socio-ecological practices related to wool and the people involved in them.
Furthermore during the BAU Residency 2026, the artists-in-residence Suzanne Bernhardt and Philipp Kolmann (ERBA), engaged in a dialogue with Merve about transhumance practices and local wool production in South Tyrol.

Ricercatrice e Designer
Merve Bektaş (Istanbul, *1993) è una designer eco-sociale, artista e attuale ricercatrice presso il Competence Centre for Mountain Innovation Ecosystems della Libera Università di Bolzano (unibz), parte del progetto PNRR iNEST. L’obiettivo del centro di competenza è lo sviluppo di nuovi prodotti e stili di vita in grado di preservare le tradizioni montane locali, garantendo al contempo la sostenibilità economica e sociale delle aree montane.
La pratica di Merve Bektaş opera all’intersezione tra ricerca basata sulla pratica, design e trasformazione eco-sociale. La sua ricerca si concentra principalmente sulla produzione locale di lana e sulle relazioni tra materiali, paesaggi e comunità. Recentemente ha fondato WOLB Wollelab, una piattaforma web che mappa per la prima volta l’ecosistema locale della lana in Alto Adige. Attraverso una mappa attiva e interattiva, il progetto rende visibili le molteplici relazioni e interazioni tra attori umani e più-che-umani sia in contesti urbani sia rurali.
A luglio 2026, Merve è stata invitata da BAU a partecipare in qualità di relatrice al Grass Socialities Symposium, l’evento conclusivo del progetto europeo Pastoral Twilight, a cui BAU ha preso parte. Con la conferenza “Designing and Making with Wool (and Sheep) of the Italian Alps”, ha condiviso le sue conoscenze sulle pratiche socio-ecologiche in relazione alla lana e ai suoi attori chiave.
