Tobias Koch (*1986, Basel) ist ein in Basel und Berlin lebender Komponist und Sound Künstler, der in den Bereichen Performance, bildende Kunst, Film und Musik arbeitet.
Tobias Kochs ortsspezifische Performances artikulieren die verschiedenen unsichtbaren auditiven Verbindungen zwischen Raum und Klang. Kochs digital gerenderte Kompositionen werden durch die sie umgebenden akustischen Frequenzen oder architektonischen Gegebenheiten verstärkt, die sich in einer Reihe von Live-Instrumentierungen des Künstlers entfalten. Die Wahrnehmung des Publikums wechselt während der gesamten Dauer der Performance zwischen dem Hören und dem Verstehen der greifbaren räumlichen Dimensionen des Raums. Durch den Einsatz von Improvisationstechniken legt er den musikalischen Fokus auf die physische Umgebung, in der die Aufführung stattfindet. Sein Ansatz führt zu einer Partitur, die eindeutig in einer gesteigerten viszeralen Erfahrung verankert ist, die sowohl Koch als auch das Publikum teilen.
Seine Arbeiten wurden beim Unsound Festival, im Leopold Museum Wien, in der Trauma Bar Berlin, auf der Biennale Son, im Palazzo delle Esposizioni Roma, im Istituto Svizzero Roma, im Centre Culturel Suisse Paris und in verschiedenen Institutionen in ganz Europa ausgestellt und aufgeführt.
Koch hat u.a. bereits Werke für das MoMA New York, die documenta 14, die Frieze Art Fair, die Tate Modern, das Centre Pompidou, die Volksbühne Berlin geschaffen. Seine Sounddesign- und Musikkompositionen waren in mehreren preisgekrönten Filmen auf dem Filmfestival Cannes, dem Locarno Film Festival, dem IFFR Rotterdam, der Berlinale und dem Toronto International Film Festival zu hören. Seine jüngste Filmmusik für den Spielfilm Drii Winter (A Piece Of Sky) wurde mit dem Georges Delerue Award ausgezeichnet, und der Film war die offizielle Einreichung der Schweiz für die Academy Awards 2023.
Auf Einladung von Uriel Orlow und BAU realisiert Tobias Koch den Soundtrack für den Film “Forest Futurismus Chapter 1: Tree Time Travel” im Rahmen der BAU Residency 2023.
Tobias Koch (*1986, Basel) is a Basel and Berlin-based composer and sound artist working across performance, visual arts, film, and music.
Tobias Koch’s site-specific performances articulate the varying unseen auditory connections between space and sound. Koch’s digitally rendered compositions become amplified by the surrounding acoustic frequencies or architectural matter which develops in a series of live instrumentations by the artist. The audience’s perception shifts between listening and understanding the tangible spatial dimensions of the space throughout the performance’s duration. Leveraging improvisational techniques, he brings a musical focus to the physical environment in which the performance takes place. His approach results in a score that is distinctly anchored in a heightened visceral experience, shared by both Koch and the audience.
He exhibited and performed his work at Unsound Festival, Leopold Museum Vienna, Trauma Bar Berlin, Biennale Son, Palazzo delle Esposizioni Roma, Istituto Svizzero Roma, Centre Culturel Suisse Paris, and various institutions throughout Europe.
Koch has previously scored works presented at MoMA New York, documenta 14, Frieze Art Fair, Tate Modern, Centre Pompidou, Volksbühne Berlin, and others. His sound design and music compositions were featured in several award-winning films at Film Festival Cannes, Locarno Film Festival, IFFR Rotterdam, Berlinale, and Toronto International Film Festival. His latest score for the feature film Drii Winter (A Piece Of Sky) was awarded the Georges Delerue Award, and the film was Switzerland’s official submission to the Academy Awards 2023.

Tobias Koch (*1986, Basilea) è un compositore e artista sonoro con sede a Basilea e Berlino che lavora tra performance, arti visive, film e musica.
Le performance specifiche del sito di Tobias Koch articolano le varie connessioni uditive invisibili tra spazio e suono. Le composizioni di Koch, renderizzate digitalmente, vengono amplificate dalle frequenze acustiche o dalla materia architettonica circostante, che si sviluppa in una serie di strumentazioni dal vivo dell’artista. La percezione del pubblico si sposta tra l’ascolto e la comprensione delle dimensioni spaziali tangibili dello spazio per tutta la durata della performance. Il suo sound design e le sue composizioni musicali sono state inserite in diversi film premiati al Festival di Cannes, al Festival di Locarno, all’IFFR di Rotterdam, alla Berlinale e al Toronto International Film Festival. La sua ultima colonna sonora per il lungometraggio Drii Winter (A Piece Of Sky) è stata premiata con il Georges Delerue Award e il film è stato presentato ufficialmente dalla Svizzera agli Academy Awards 2023.
