Von März bis September 2023 hat BAU an der Sicherung und Archivierung des Werkes des verstorbenen Fotografen und Künstlers Christian Martinelli gearbeitet. Dabei ging es vor allem darum, den Werkbestand des Künstlers in seinem Atelier und Wohnhaus in der Villa Dolores in Meran zu sichern und mehr als 460 Werke digital zu erfassen. Doch was ist ein künstlerischer Nachlass? Was ein Künstler hinterlässt, ist weit mehr als nur sein künstlerisches Werk, es sind auch Arbeitsmaterialien, Fotonegative und unvollendete Arbeiten, Notizbücher, Projektideen, Zeitungsartikel und Einladungskarten. All dies wird mit den Kunstwerken Teil des künstlerischen Nachlasses.
Die Ausstellung “incontrare Christian Martinelli begegnen” in der Kunst Meran hat BAU die Möglichkeit gegeben über die Frage der Handlungsfähigkeit eines Künstlernachlasses in einer kuratorischen Intervention im dritten Stock der Institution nachzudenken. Es ist eine Einladung in einen Denkraum einzutauchen. Anhand einer Auswahl von Werken, Arbeitsmaterialien und Publikationen aus dem Archiv des Künstlers werden die Besucher:innen eingeladen sich mit dem komplexen Thema des künstlerischen Nachlasses auseinanderzusetzen. In einer Reihe von öffentlichen Veranstaltungen im November und Dezember kann sich das Publikum im Rahmen eines Workshops, eines Runden Tisches und eines Gesprächs mit den Fragen rund um den Künstlernachlass auseinandersetzen.

Was ist ein künstlerischer Nachlass? Wie soll die Nachlassarbeit beginnen? In welchem Zustand ist der künstlerische Nachlass? Wie wird der künstlerische Nachlass gesichert? Im Workshop werden die Teilnehmer*innen in die Grundlagen der Bearbeitung eines künstlerischen Nachlasses eingeführt. Nach dem Besuch der Ausstellung folgt ein praktischer Teil zur Erfassung der Originalwerke des Künstlers Christian Martinelli. Mit Hilfe einfacher Instrumente wie Seidenpapier, Handschuhe und Meterband katalogisieren wir einzelne Werke des Künstlers. Der Workshop richtet sich nicht nur an Künstler*innen, sondern auch an all jene, die sich für Kunstwerke und deren Organisation und Verwaltung interessieren.

Künstlerische Nachlässe sind ein wichtiger Bestandteil des kulturellen Erbes einer Region. Das Erfassen, Sichern, Lagern und Öffentlichmachen des Werkbestandes sind dabei einige der Herausforderungen, denen Erben, Archive und andere Kulturinstitutionen entgegentreten müssen. Gemeinsam mit Vertreter*innen aus Kulturpolitik, Kunstinstitutionen, Universität und Rechtswissenschaften diskutieren wir über die verschiedenen Aspekte der Nachlassarbeit und die Möglichkeiten durch Vorlässe
schon vorab strukturelle Rahmenbedingungen zu schaffen, die den Erhalt eines künstlerischen Oeuvres für die Zukunft erleichtern.

Wie kann man für einen künstlerischern Nachlass Sorge tragen? Mariah Nielson ist Tochter des amerikanischen Bildhauers JB Blunk (1926-2002) und seit 2007 Direktorin seines Nachlasses. Durch präzise kuratorische Entscheidungen kontextualisiert die Designhistorikerin das Werk ihres Vaters in Ausstellungen, Publikationen und Residenzen und sorgt dafür, dass das JB Blunks Werk weiterhin lebendig und relevant bleibt. In ihrem Vortrag wird sie einen Einblick in ihre Arbeit geben und beispielhaft von der Sichtung, Erfassung und Aktivierung dieses Nachlasses erzählen.
Mariah Nielsons Ausbildung als Architektin hat ihre Arbeit als Kuratorin und Designhistorikerin beeinflusst. Sie arbeitete als Kuratorin am Museum of Craft and Design, San Francisco (2009-2011) und als Leiterin der JB Blunk Residency (2007-2011). Im Jahr 2013 schloss sie einen MA in Designgeschichte am Royal College of Art und dem Victoria & Albert Museum, London, ab. Derzeit ist sie Direktorin des JB Blunk Estate und des Ausstellungsraumes Blunk Space.

From March to September 2023 BAU has been working on securing and archiving the work of the late photographer and artist Christian Martinelli. The main task here was to secure the artist’s stock of works in his studio and residence at Villa Dolores and to digitally record more than 460 works. But what is an artistic estate? What an artist leaves behind is much more than just his or her artistic oeuvre; it also includes working materials, photo negatives and unfinished works, notebooks, project ideas, newspaper articles and invitation cards. All of this becomes part of his artistic legacy with the artworks.
The exhibition “incontrare Christian Martinelli begegnen” at Kunst Meran Merano Arte has given us the opportunity to reflect on the question of the agency of an artist’s estate in a section curated in the third floor of the institution. It is an invitation to immerse oneself in a thinking space. With the help of a selection of works, working materials and publications from the artist’s archives, visitors are invited to engage with the complex theme of the artistic estate. A series of public events in November and December will allow the public to interact with the questions around the artist’s estate through a workshop, a roundtable and a talk.

What is an artist’s estate? How to deal with its organisation? What is its state of conservation? How to secure it? In a two-hour workshop on the third floor of Merano Arte, participants will be introduced to the basic principles of organising an artist’s bequest. Through practical actions and the observation of original works by artist Christian Martinelli, with the help of simple tools such as gloves, tissue paper, tape and a tape measure, the works will be inventoried and catalogued.

Artistic estates are an important part of a region’s cultural heritage. Recording, safeguarding, storing and publicising these works are some of the challenges that heirs, archives and other cultural institutions have to face. Together with representatives from the fields of cultural policy, art institutions, universities and law, we will be discussing the various aspects of estate work and the possibilities of creating a structural framework in advance through bequests, to create structural framework conditions in advance that facilitate the preservation of an artistic oeuvre for the future.

How can one take care of an artistic estate? Mariah Nielson is the daughter of the American sculptor JB Blunk (1926-2002) and has been the director of the JB Blunk estate since 2007. Through intelligent curatorial decisions, the design historian contextualises her father’s work in exhibitions, publications and residencies, ensuring that Blunk’s work remains alive and relevant. In her lecture, she will give an insight into her work with the JB Blunk estate and give examples of how she archived and documented his work and established the estate.
Mariah Nielson’s background as an architect has informed her work as a curator and design historian. She worked as curator at the Museum of Craft and Design, San Francisco, (2009–2011) and as director of the JB Blunk Residency (2007-2011). In 2013, she completed an MA in Design History at the Royal College of Art and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. Mariah is currently the Director of the JB Blunk Estate and the Blunk Space.

Da marzo a settembre 2023 BAU ha lavorato alla messa in sicurezza e all’archiviazione dell’opera del fotografo e artista Christian Martinelli. Il compito principale è stato quello di mettere in sicurezza il patrimonio di opere dell’artista nel suo studio e nella sua residenza di Villa Dolores a Merano e di registrare digitalmente più di 460 opere. Ma cos’è un lascito artistico? Ciò che un artista lascia è molto di più della sua opera artistica; comprende anche materiali di lavoro, negativi fotografici e opere incompiute, quaderni, idee di progetti, articoli di giornale e biglietti d’invito. Tutto questo diventa parte del suo patrimonio artistico insieme alle opere d’arte.
La mostra “incontrare Christian Martinelli begegnen” alla Merano Arte ci ha dato l’opportunità di riflettere sulla questione della possibilità d’azione di un lascito d’artista in una sezione curata al terzo piano dell’istituzione. È un invito a immergersi in uno spazio di pensiero. Con l’aiuto di una selezione di opere, materiali di lavoro e pubblicazioni provenienti dagli archivi dell’artista, i visitatori e le visitatrici sono invitat* a confrontarsi con il complesso tema del lascito d’artista. Una serie di eventi pubblici nei mesi di novembre e dicembre consentirà al pubblico di interagire con le domande relative al lascito dell’artista attraverso un workshop, una tavola rotonda e una conferenza.

Che cos’è il lascito di un artista? Come gestire la sua organizzazione? Qual è il suo stato di conservazione? Come metterlo al sicuro? In un workshop di due ore al terzo piano di Merano Arte, i partecipanti saranno introdotti ai principi di base dell’organizzazione di un lascito d’artista. Attraverso azioni pratiche e l’osservazione di opere originali dell’artista Christian Martinelli, con l’aiuto di semplici strumenti come guanti, carta velina, nastro adesivo e metro, le opere saranno inventariate e catalogate. Il laboratorio è rivolto non solo agli artisti ma a tutti coloro che sono interessati al confronto.

I beni artistici sono una parte importante del patrimonio culturale di una regione. La registrazione, la salvaguardia, la conservazione e la divulgazione di queste opere sono alcune delle sfide che eredi, archivi e altre istituzioni culturali devono affrontare. Insieme a rappresentanti della politica culturale, delle istituzioni artistiche, delle università e del diritto, discuteremo i vari aspetti del lavoro di successione e le possibilità di creare un quadro strutturale in anticipo attraverso i lasciti, per creare condizioni strutturali in anticipo che facilitino la conservazione di un’opera artistica per il futuro.
